I've never been in a viewing tunnel before. What is it?
Step 1: Descend into the tunnel and get into people movers.
Step 2: Get hyped up about the experience
Step 3: Get mesmerized by the light show in the 5 minutes that it takes to cross from Pudong to Old Shanghai via a Tunnel
Step 4: Arrive at the Bund and emerge from the Tunnel. Incidentally, this area is called the Bund because the Brits brought Indian labor to build the embankments on the side of the river to prevent erosion. The Hindi word for embankment is "band" which turned into Bund. Of course, the Shanghainese call it a mandarin name, Waitan.
Said our Lonely Planet Shanghai guide of the Tunnel: " Its awfulness almost guaranteeing it a cherished cult appeal, the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is a... voyage via budget effects, garish lighting, ...and knuckly gnawingly awful props [...true...]... visitors are visibibly nonplussed, their disbelief surpassed only by those with return tickets..."
Fact is, this is a quick way for the tourist to get from New Shanghai to Old Shanghai....if you don't want to take the Subway.
